Rationale for the Data Analysis Unit:
This unit is an introduction into data collection, representation and analysis. Learning about this topic is important because it provides students with skills that they can use in real life situations. Analyzing information with graphs and charts provides valuable information because this visual representation makes it easier to draw relationships and conclusions about the data. Learners will be creating and conducting a survey of their choice and charting and analyzing the results. An activity like survey analysis, communicates to students that math is useful outside the classroom. Because we have structured the research query around ‘getting to know our classroom,’ students will see that math, data, and graphs can help us understand the world and people around us.
